8th Grade Parent Orientation - Feb. 24th - Come join us!

Orientation and registration for school year 2016-2017 is ready to begin.

On the evening of Wednesday, February 24th at 7:00 p.m. in the Wahconah Regional High School Auditorium a special orientation program will be held for the parents and students for the Class of 2020.  This will be an important and informative meeting and will help parents to better guide their students through the scheduling process and see the outstanding programs that are available in our high school.  Administration and staff will be present to answer any questions about their courses or other concerns.  Also, there will be student representatives from our National Honor Society available to answer questions for incoming 8th graders.

Parents and students who would like to tour the high school may do so prior to the evening program.  Members of the W.R.H.S. National Honor Society will offer tours of the building from 6:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.

The W.R.H.S. Guidance staff will present course registration materials to eighth grade students at Nessacus on Friday, February 12th and at St. Agnes on Wednesday, February 10th at 12:45 p.m.  The students will receive a Program of Studies Guide and will be advised as to the required courses and elective options that will be available to them next year at Wahconah.  Parents are encouraged to review this guide as well.  There are a number of school policies included in the Program of Studies as well as a brief outline of all of the high school courses.

Communication and cooperation among students, teachers, parents, and counselors will help ensure the most suitable and challenging high school program.  We hope you will be able to join us as this process begins.

If you have any questions prior to the event, please contact Peter Andersen, Guidance Counselor at (413) 684-1330, ext. 1324.

Health Office News

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Screenings: Vision and hearing screenings in grade 10 are very nearly completed.  Postural screening for the 9th graders will ensue shortly after the new term starts. This year I will be including vision and hearing screening, height and wt. in this encounter. Parents/Guardians are notified by mail if their student does not pass a screening.

Physical Exam Requirements: All students entering gr 10 (as well as K, 4th, and 7th) are required to submit a physical exam report and current immunization report to the school nurse. Recently I have been receiving some immunization reports without the physical exam report. Please ask the PCP to provide the school nurse with both documents.

Pain Management after surgery: Please notify me if your student will be having surgery for removal of wisdom teeth or surgery for some other purpose. There are strategies I would like to review with you prior to the procedure to help promote recovery with the least medication.  After wisdom teeth removal, generally prescription medication is only necessary for one day and alternating ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) with acetaminophen (Tylenol) and using cold packs is very helpful.

The next School Health Advisory meeting is scheduled for Monday February 8, 2016, 6PM at Nessacus RMS. All parents/guardians and students are invited to be part of this multidisciplinary committee to discuss health issues pertinent to the district student body and make recommendations to the school committee. We have previously been involved with the district Wellness Policy and the change in water bottle use at the high school. Members include representatives from administration, school committee, school nurses, physical education, food service, parents/guardians and students. Your presence would be very welcome.

Sincerely,

Phoebe Bushway RN MS NCSN
